What do you do with excess used cooking oil?

It’s wrong to put it down the drain.

We collect ours in the sunflower oil bottles. And then a short walk away one of our local supermarkets has a collection point.

It means that oil can be collected and recycled into fuel.

It’s as simple as that. Less waste; more recycling.

How do you deal with cooking oil?

Is it easy to dispose of where you live?

What a fantastic resource to be able to use. There is nothing like that for domestic use in the North of England as far as I know (I think it’s available for commercial premises). Until it came to light that it was such an issue (only in the past year really) I’m afraid it did go down the drain. Now, if it’s not too much I’ll mop it up with paper towels and put it on the compost, but if I’ve been deep frying (which isn’t often) I’m currently pouring it around the base of a bramble bush in our back lane!! I hope it doesn’t damage the soil too much… It doesn’t seem to have affected the plant!

Thankfully I don’t have any waste oil as I don’t deep fry things. If I have any fat from cooking meat then I soak it up with kitchen roll or old newspapers and put it in our brown bin that is for food waste and garden stuff. I don’t know if our recycling places will take it, but will have a look next time I am there.

There is a collection point for used cooking oil in my area. But the way I use cooking oil doesn’t (often) create waste oil.
Responding to other readers, I save excess meat fat in the fridge until I have enough to make a couple of ‘fat balls’ (with bird seed added) for the birds. If I have more fat balls than I need, they freeze well.

Great ideas Julia. Thanks for sharing. We don’t have meat or meat fat.

You could put it in cups and sell it to Germans 😉

This recycling scheme is such a good idea – I’m not sure we have anything like it in the UK, I’ll check it out though.
