I have another environmental habit that could well help me keep fit.
But it has other benefits.
There’s a department store in the centre of the Hague which has an amazing feature that few people enjoy.
It’s also free.
The store was built in 1926 and the staircase is absolutely beautiful.
It’s from a chain called the Bijenkorf which means beehive.
The staircase had stained glass windows that are amazing. By taking the stairs I’m not in need of electricity and it’s interesting.
It has different themes on every floor. If you don’t walk you don’t see it. It’s as simple as that. An exquisite secret hiding in the heart of the city.
The mirrors and the banisters all make it worth the thigh work.
When we found this staircase it increased my determination to checkout other staircases too.
How do you save energy out and about?
Have you found any hidden treasures when taking the stairs?

Beautiful stain glass artistry – I like the idea of making staircases more interesting to encourage people to climb them.

Do you notice many people taking those stairs to look at the beautiful windows?
What a find. I do try to take the stairs where possible as it is better for me, but haven’t come across anything very interesting so far.

Hi Lizzy, great blog, great post! Like when following Strandlopers you discover that walking (slow or fast) off the beaten track (elevator) opens the way to discover beauty, it’s a natural way that gives surprising rewards every single time. You never know beforehand but it will present itself.
The energy is saveable also when walking up the stairs, we practice an efficient mix of body posture, breathing technique and mindset, and you know what: it’s most probably very close to the way in which hunter-gatherers walked. Fascinating and comforting to discover that we (still) have a natural way in our genes, in our system.
Groetjes!

Beautiful! Taking the stairs – and walking more often in general – helped me lose 40 pounds last year.

great, Peppergrass! it helps me to stay or become aware of litte ‘helpful’ things – yesterday the fact that when curling up the corners of your mouth (even when not happy, so just mechanically) your eyebows follow – waves everywhere in nature, like the a natural state 🙂

They are very lovely. Its like a step back in time. Each floor has very different glass too.

I choose stairs versus lifts/escalators whenever feasible. And when out at the Grand Theatre (Swansea, UK), we always check out the (usually local) art displays via the spiral staircase. 🙂
