Follow that Tree in June
This is the forth month of tree following. In that time the tree has been bare and barky and finally leaf buds appeared in May.
Now the leaves are in full flood. They create a really impressive impact on our street. The trees lining the road form such dense foliage that they dominate, almost hiding the houses on either side. Their branches reach out to each other creating a canopy too.
Measuring the tree
We decided to try and measure the tree a couple of months ago but it didn’t happen. So this time we are very keen.
I used two different measures and it came out at 35′ plus my height so about 40 feet height.
Other features
We planted lavender at the base of our tree around four years ago. For some reason the lavender only thrives on the southern side of the tree. On the north in spite of our attempts it remains stubby.
This year it’s looking great.
The local council tend the trees but they allow the additions made by residents to remain around them. This us something I think is brilliant. A bit of guerrilla gardening that has been accepted.
Inhabitants
I haven’t managed well with bird photos but we’ve observed blackbirds, jackdaws, blue tits, great tits and robins as well as those green parrots in the tree.

I enjoyed learning more about the Green Parakeets on BBC Springwatch last week. We don’t seem to have them here, but I’ve seen some at Hampton Court in London.

It must be strange seeing green parrakeets in your tree. A bit like seeing a giraffe striding past.

Yes it is. It’s very odd indeed. I’m going to write more about the parrots soon as I have a photo with almost 20 in it.

I too was interested in the parakeets – and I too have only come across them in the park behind Hampton Court.
Fascinating about the lavender. Do you think it’s because one side gets sun and the other doesn’t or that it doesn’t like the car fumes at the road edge?

I sort of think it’s the sun but it’s still odd that the northerly ones are so small as they’re bit really behind the tree.

A parrot tree! Now there’s something one does not see every day. I am impressed with the keen measuring skills! Street trees are so important. I always cringe in a town or city without any trees and all pavement.

Such a cool idea to put lavendar at the bottom of the tree. We have an old tree stump in our garden I wonder if that too would work out well. It would look pretty.
I have had a handful of blackcurrants today from one of the tubs! So zesty and also feels so good to eat them, full of vitamins!

There’s a few places near us where the council have out lavender around the trees. It also puts off the visiting hounds!

The bees will love it. Just make sure the lavender hasn’t been pretreated with pesticide!

Ah I never thought to check this! Will see if I can find organic, maybe in a natural herb shop (I know they sometimes sell plants to grow)
