Green Lizard's Blog

The planet is our home; we need to be more responsible. Here's what I do.

Following a tree

I’ve joined a group of bloggers who are following a tree.

loose and leafy has done this before.

The concept is simple. Track your tree on 7th of each month across the year.

There’s more details on the blog page.

So my tree is in front of our house.

The street is an avenue.

So there are trees at regular intervals. This tree is one of the oldest and possibly older than the others.

The Netherlands was occupied during the war and one of the buildings on our street has the year 1945 built into the brick work.

Our house has been here since the fifties. So the tree could be here since that time. It’s possibly around sixty years old.

I’m not much of a biologist so I’m hoping to learn more about our tree from this project.
First I’ll need to figure out what type of tree it is.

Here’s the other things I can do.

Choose a tree and see what it does:
when its leaves appear and when they fall
which twigs grow and which fall off
if it has seeds and if any germinate and grow into new trees
what its bark looks like – when it’s wet and when it’s dry
whether anything grows on it – like lichen
whether creatures sit on – insects, birds, butterflies
what plants grow round it and what they do too.

I will endeavour to update this post this week with further details.

Do you have a tree that could join the study?

Here’s a link to the additional info on my tree for March.

I just signed up to do this but haven’t done my tree post yet. I don’t know that much about them either, but it is fun to learn about new things in nature. I love the premise of your blog and your nature friendly philosophy…I also do a nature meme. Small, but is about 4 years old. I post on Monday nights called “Nature Notes”..anything about nature and there are bloggers who post from Norway from time to time..Michelle

Sounds good. I’m embarrassed that I don’t even know what type of tree it is yet. I’ve lived here ten years! Still worth finding out. Thanks for all the reading of my blog!

I could literally name a dozen trees in my neighborhood that I follow, not as far as taking pictures, but there are some beautiful old oak trees, a Japanese maple and some ginko trees. There is also an amazing red maple tree and we have a much smaller one in our yard. I grew up in a lot full to bursting with trees, so I love them all! It’s like picking a favorite child! But I think I will hop on and maybe do a post of my favorite trees around the area, when they start to grow leaves again! What a fun idea!

That’s okay! It’s a bit daft that I don’t know. It’s only been there the whole eleven years!

I just think it should be something we do know but these days we don’t. Mind you! I didn’t know what a Jerusalem artichoke was not so long ago. Which reminds me. You need to get ‘bonenkruid’abd grow that too. I think it’s called winter savoury but the Dutch name means bean herb. It tackles a key side affect that you also get from beans!

There is something on the tip of my tongue for the latter but I don’t know if it is what you mean. Will look up bonenkruid.

Bonenkruid is genus satureja (varieties include winter savoury and summer savoury). So now I know about a new and interesting herb – will get some if I can find it.

I am intrigued by your nameless tree. Does it have blossom? I am glad you are going to find out what it is. it’s like not knowing the name of your neighbour, not knowing the name of the tree outside your house.
This tree following meme is such a great idea..

Exactly. It has started to bud for leaves. It’s also that today’s been to hectic! Not that I couldn’t have found out in the last ten or eleven years of course. I have found out that the council has a public list of all trees I. Our entire borough but it’s very detailed. There’s a lot if trees!
