The garden delivers. It’s a great moment. The first firsts!
First broad beans.
Our winter planted aquadulce Claudia failed and these are their successors.
First Courgettes
Round ones that we’ve grown. They’re tasty sweet and then there’s the yellow ones too.
First Garlic!
Wow it’s like the fresh stuff you buy in the supermarket. We planted that back in October too.
First Blueberries
Woooohooooo! If they’re as big as my thumbnail I’m happy!
More strawberries
Keep ’em coming!
Now when you get to the plot you need additional skills.
There used to be a UK show called Ready Steady Cook
A simple concept; a shopping bag of food, a TV chef and twenty minutes make meals.
This is the scene in our house. The challenge in our house? It’s my turn!
So I opened the cupboard. We stupidly forgot to harvest an onion! Doh!
Ah, two shallots!
In the fridge?
Eight mushrooms.
(I’m always one for leftovers and pantry cooking.)
A tin of chickpeas
Some pumpkin seeds
Basmati rice
Now when I cook there’s a mixed response. Often cos there’s no plan and half my chosen ingredients are unavailable!
But today was different.
Hence the title of this post.
What did I do?
I cooked a mug full of rice in a pan. I started it in cold water to save energy. It took about fifteen minutes but that’s not accurate. I drained it.
Meanwhile
I fried the chopped mushrooms, courgettes, and shallots in a little sunflower oil.
After a bit I added the rinsed chickpeas, the pumpkin seeds and crushed garlic.
Furthermore
I steamed the broad beans for ten mins.
Then I threw it all together in the pan with the veggies.
I ate mine with gluten free soya sauce. The normal chef had Indonesian sweet soya sauce.
And then there were second helpings…
And then there were thirds….
And it’s all gone!
(I think a bowl of soya yogurt with blueberries and strawberries is about to disappear next…)

Fantastic! There is nothing more thrilling than your first harvest of the year. You are ahead of me with your courgettes, beans and strawberries. Still not long now.

We gambled and planted early. And the weather was on our side!

Lovely ‘first firsts’! You’re weeks ahead of me, my blueberries are still teeny tiny greenish things! Looked delicious…

Growing your own food is so rewarding. We have an allotment patch, and just harvested a load of beetroot and strawberries.
I swear the hard work you put in makes it taste so much better haha
Also, that stir fry looks great. Amazing what you can do with a few random ingredients!

I’m all into random. It’s the first time we’ve got success with things like garlic as well. Really pleased!

Sounds and looks delicious, I often find those dishes I throw together quickly turn out the best. Jealous that you have courgettes already.

Wow – that looks like a gorgeous first cropping. Did I spy some white strawberries in there. I have some seeds for those but I won’t be planting them until next year.

They’re not white. Basically I often pick partially ripe strawberries as they still taste good and can ripen further in the fridge. And I have a weird strawberry mystery. A creature is creating stockpiles of unripened fruits under the leaves.

Fair enough, I’m afraid I can’t solve your mystery though.

We’ve has those kind of days too… Throw open the cupboard, see what fresh veg have been harvested and see what sort of meal we can make out of the lot.
We got a little Gemente allotment last year… for Euro 30,– you have it from mid March to November, the plot is 3×5 meters and a friend and I had a plot each and had a crash course in gardening as organically as possible.
I didn’t of course manage to do much physical work on crutches but went a few times and sat on a seat whilst I pulled weeds.
Several friends helped Himself and the kids with watering, planting and taking the weeds away in the wheelbarrow. We had more courgettes than we knew what to do with and some total failures: sweetcorn that probably suffered from being planted too late and a very wet august in an otherwise nice summer.
We will try again this year too…some interesting dinners ahead!
