The planet is our home; we need to be more responsible. Here's what I do.

Yoga Paradise

So ‘long time no see’. I took a break and as is often the case, the break led to slack habits.

No blogging. Terrible.

I’m back.

With a great story.

I’ve been on a magical yoga retreat that has given me my bearings back.

Yoga Rocks is set on cliffs in the south of the island of Crete.

The ocean beckons, visible from the yoga platform, the eating area and the accommodation balconies.

The location is not only idyllic but isolated. There are only a couple of other buildings near by and the peace that results is tremendous. No nightclubs, few tourists, no interruptions.

Schedule

Each day we started our morning with silence (mauna) at breakfast. A great way to reconnect with yourself.

There’s an abundance of fresh fruit, yogurt and muesli.

The opportunity to meditate was also available.

Classes

The first Iyenga yoga class each day lasted two and a half hours. Our teachers from The Netherlands worked together to help support and develop our understanding of our own bodies and postures.

The second class at the end of the afternoon was ninety minutes. The focus was restorative.

Between classes, we could hammock, relax, swim in the sea or walk in the open air.

Food

Wow! The food was amazing. Indescribable and delicious. A vegetarian feast with tasty goodies at breakfast, lunch and dinner. There was special attention given to dietary needs of all guests.

Environment

A key focus at Yoga Rocks is repeat for the environment.

The breakfast room features a hand fruit press. Each guest can select from the baskets of fruit to create her own drink. The waste goes straight to compost.

There’s home made peanut butter, jam and yoghurt.  Tea and herbs are available for hot drinks. There’s no packaging but infusers.

The rooms have recycling bins to filter paper, glass and plastic bottles.

It certainly gave me food for thought to consider new ways of reducing waste and plastic rubbish back home.

People

Our hosts, Helen and Phil, and their lovely staff were kind and thoughtful, making everyone feel at home.

It basically does what the name says. It Rocks!
