A-maizing Allotment

when you neglect your allotment it’s quite simple. Weeds grow. They grow everywhere. They grow numerous. They grow fast. 

They mask everything and choke it out. 

We have one called quick weed. It is. 

So it’s been a month since my last allotment visit. Don’t judge me. Other stuff gets in the way. It just does. Then you plan a visit and the weather lets you down. 

It can’t be helped. 

It’s a good lesson in accepting things. 

I accept that the two plums on the one plum tree are gone. It’s hard to know where. 

I accept that the onions are heavily disguised but they are there…. Somewhere. 

I accept that there will be surprises. 

  
Good ones like this Passion flower. And bad ones.   

The most beautiful looking corn ever grown by us. Shame we should’ve eaten if about two weeks ago. But hey the chickens are enjoying it now. 

We’ve harvested choke berries, blueberries, raspberries, courgettes (at last) pumpkins (a legion), beans (a handful). There are also several of these. 

  
They might be cucumber melons. (They might not) I’ll have to check. Don’t be fooled mind. They are neither the size of cucumbers or melons. But they are the size  

 Of part of my finger. They taste like a teeny weeny cucumber. 

(They are Mexican baby gherkins!)

We have yellow tomatoes too. They are miniature too. 

The summer was dry and wet and hard. It was a survival of the fittest (and the pumpkin’s) situation. 

  
Thing is, we always get something. There should also be parsnips, apples, beetroot, tomatoes and potatoes. 

We’ve had a lot of rhubarb, broad beans and other things. So it’s pretty good.
