Cute Coot

Yesterday while walking a friend’s dog we saw a great example of nature and tenacity.

A coot was bringing sticks to a nest in the middle of the drainage ditch.

Meanwhile the second coot was sitting pretty on the nest.  On the journey the little bird decided that two male ducks were too close to the offspring.

So the bird gave chase.

The wake in the water was impressive as the tiny feathered creature made a clear message to keep away.

Both make ducks were speedy in their retreat. It looked as if this adversary was one they already knew. After they had swum a fair distance, the coot slowed down. Obviously satisfied with their retreat.

I don’t know which bird was male and which was female but they are the most committed parents.

Have you seen impressive nature this spring and summer?

Epic. You should be a writer! Curiously the UK word for this bird sounds remarkably like a Dutch word that’s considered very rude indeedy!
