The planet is our home; we need to be more responsible. Here's what I do.

20th Century ingenuity

There’s a retro feel about our house often times. We have often adopted old ways of doing something which are more environmentally sound.

Imagine my surprise when I visited the 20th century museum in Hoorn in The Netherlands and found myself very much at home.

There was a display of carpet sweepers. Just like ours.

A cooking pan set to use at the table. Just like ours.

A clothes aired quite a lot like ours!

And one I’d quite like to own. It’s like an umbrella without the cover.

Very handy.

Are there any aspects of your home that are like a museum?

Cultural lag is my style. Take care of the old equipment is my advice. My Dutch ancestors taught me to be cheap and there is a lot of overlap with being cheap and being green. I enjoy your perspective on what’s happening in the land of my ancestors. Being four and five generations removed from the Netherlands, I don’t speak the language.

The museum was filled with Dutch ingenuity. I’m sure you’d have enjoyed it.

I hang my clothes out to dry in a similar way and do the washing up by hand in the sink, which seems to be unusual nowadays! We have very up-to-date computing equipment and all kinds of techy gadgets but no car, dishwasher or microwave. A mix of old and new.

I think of my canning, pickling and other preserving as kind of retro.

Yes. And a tasty treat in a few months to look forward to.

It was when I found my mobile phone in a museum that I realised it was time to update – my boys had been telling me this for years! But otherwise, yes I have a carpet sweeper and a handpush lawnmower and I’d love one of those clothes dryers!
