Down in the Dumps
Christmas time turns my thoughts to rubbish.
Extra stuff that creates waste. So while sliming through the photos I had a flashback.
Now’s the time to sort that rubbish out.
Our local recycling centre has excellent sorting facilities.
The wagons that collect waste in our area come for green waste and general waste every week. Our paper collection comes once a month.
At this time of year in early January so collection is done just for Christmas trees. These will be composted and added to different projects. In the UK in some areas, Christmas trees are added to the back of beaches to help create artificial sand dunes.
At home we separate batteries, light bulbs and electrical goods along with any chemical containers, paint etc. These can be brought to this section at the dump.

Aberdeen is pretty good for recycling. We have a normal waste collection once a fortnight and they are talking about reducing the size of the bins. Then we have a fortnightly collections for bottles, both glass and plastic, and tins and at the same time one for papers. On another day that week you can leave out a brown bin with garden and kitchen waste. You can leave old batteries in quite a few places; supermarkets and DIY stores. We also have excellent recycling centres where you can leave all the above as well as other larger items. So we have no excuse at all. It is amazing how quickly it all became second nature to separate waste.

The best thing to do is to create as little as possible in the first place! Our biggest problem is glass…because it isn’t properly recycled in WA (although the councils take it and pretend it is) we try to buy as much stuff in bulk as possible, but it’s hard to avoid completely. Especially alcohol (beer and wine) which at this time of year creates more waste than normal!
I just discovered somewhere local that recycles corks (not sure what they do with them…) so that’s one less thing in the bin!

We recycle a lot. We use holiday bags instead of wrapping paper and use the bags many times.
I use Christmas trees for bean poles in the garden.

My Dad used them for poles all the time when I was growing up.
I have enough now to lash two together and use several sets to hold up an old piece of strapping that I saved and create a 8′ long trellis.
I may have a photo, but last year my garden was a mess.

Sheer genius. Mind you i had kust envisaged the whole tree stuck in the ground draped with beans instead of tinsel!

My hometown has trash and recycling pick up on the same night, but my stealthy wife has seen the guys throw everything into the same truck and compact it. Other friends have seen the same thing. A game to bust this practice is afoot. Peace, John

We just went to a system where all items were separated, paper, plastic, etc. and put on the curb to one where it’s all put together. Less costly for the pick up people but not as efficient.
We do have a marvelous recycling facility where they have a “shop” where you can go in and pick up anything from light bulbs to paint, to almost any chemical that’s dropped off for free.

Ive opted to skip the Christmas tree. I think it’s silly. My Christmas trees stay up year round, outside like they belong. This year, instead of wrapping, I packed everyone’s goodies in tote bags that I made. I planned to do more homemade gifts, but, uh, yeah, time got very much away from me. If I ever get the desire to decorate a tree, I’ll use popcorn, suet and bird feeders.
And I could say quite a piece on the mountains of trash that Christmas creates…
