December at the Allotment

The weather has changed and it’s cold outside. But a short trip to the allotment is a good idea at this time of year.

There’s a few good jobs to do.

First up; plant a tree! As in yesterday’s post!

Then chop down the asparagus fronds. Asparagus grows short spears that we cut quickly very early in the year. Then it’s allowed to sprout into long wispy fronds. When they start to look dead it’s time to cut them down. This should’ve happened in November but this year’s crazy weather made it late.

Next up. Time for a spot of tidying up. The front edge is a bit weedy so some quick work with a rake and some elbow grease does the trick.

I also finished pruning the raspberry canes. Autumn sprouting raspberry canes should be pruned right back at the end of the year.

We covered the globe artichoke to protect against the frost.

I noticed that the Passion flower had a lot more buds even though it’s December.

And this lupin was starting to flower and sprout again.

Meanwhile there was a bit of ground turning going on too.

Still to harvest

We had some coriander, purple Brussels sprouts, purple sprouting broccoli, purple kale and Jerusalem artichokes.

We achieved a lot in an hour and a bit.
