The planet is our home; we need to be more responsible. Here's what I do.

Smart Streets

In The Netherlands there’s so much smart town planning. I’ve blogged about it before.

Simple things are also incorporated into street design that subtly support different types of people.

When walking here you may not have looked at the ground very much but when you do you’ll see something clever.

There are lots of special types of paving. These are intended to guide and warn those with limited vision. They give information about the ground. They warn about steps and crossings and roads.

It’s subtle but smart and helps people to use public transport more safely.

Each type of surface is like a Braille signal.

I think it’s really clever. Public transport helps the environment and it needs to be accessible.

The paving marks out pathways too. These lead a person to the train and to the doors and steps.

Each elevated station also has a lift to bring people with limited mobility to street level.

Another clever Dutch innovation.
