Big Yellow Taxi

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot SPOT
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Til it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
Then they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see ’em
Don’t it always seem to go,
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Til it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer, farmer
Put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But LEAVE me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Til its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Come and took away my old man
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Til it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I said
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Til it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Sometimes we don’t really think about lyrics. We know them, we sing them, we hum them.

But I think we don’t always hear them.

Joni Mitchell was a tremendous singer songwriter.

This song was released in 1970. I wasn’t even two years old. And yet the words ring even more true today. In fact it’s quite disturbing that more than 40 years ago a song like this was pointing out something so terrible for our future. When songwriters point out these things it’s so easy not to take any notice.

Yet don’t we need to listen?IMG_8986.JPG

Hey farmer, the DDT of forty years ago has been replaced by pesticides that are seventy times more potent. One corn seed coated in it can kill 200,000 bees. That’s five big bee hives full.

We didn’t listen.

A brilliant song! Sadly those who most need to listen to this message have their heads buried in their piles of money – made at the expense of the planet and most of the living things on it.
