The Green man Hive

A friend of ours, the saw doctor, has skills in chainsaw sculpture and he decided to turn his hand to an unusual bed hive.

I shared a photo of it in that post. Now after I posted a number of people asked for more information about the hive. So here’s a post about that hive.

He started with a large trunk section of a tree I should’ve found out what kind tree but I haven’t. He began by making a face on the outside. Its an old man who might be found in the woods.

He was working based on a photograph that we had already sent him. It’s quite a difficult skill to create a hollow object for a hive that has got an intricate carving on the outside.

It was his first attempt.

He then hollowed out the inside but realised that there are a few spots which were a bit too close to the external carving.

It has long vertical frames for the bees in contrast to the normal horizontal frames that we use in standard hives. These can be accessed under his hat.

There is a back access door that could be used as a viewing chamber too.

I think this-is going to be a great addition to the hive family. It’ll be interesting to see what we do with it next.

What a cool hive! It’ll be interesting to see how it works for you and the bees.

It could be very interesting. But we’ll be waiting for spring.

I’ve seen so many interesting hives lately. This is beautiful! Thanks for sharing the detailed photos. Maybe I can interest my hubby in learning a new skill and making me one 🙂

Wow! I love sculptures and love honeybees – but never in my life thought it possible to combine the two!
