Gluten free Bagels

IMG_8202.JPG

I haven’t written about gluten free food specifically for a while but we had a good experience last weekend.

While picking up tickets for the cinema we wanted a spot of lunch.

The Netherlands is a challenge when you don’t eat bread. Most lunch places have a sandwich based menu and the options always start with ham, cheese and ham and cheese.

There are other options now but bread free options are generally rare.

The town where the library cinema lies has a bagel shop. The bagel shop has gluten free bagels and soya milk.

This was fantastic news! The empty purple plates speak for themselves.

Well done Bagel Alley!

We had the added bonus of a windmill in the town too!

Looks wonderful there. (My other home). The purple plates are beautiful. I suppose you were too hungry to photograph the bages? lol

The minute you don’t eat a totally standard diet, it can become quite a challenge to eat out. When I was living in both France and Germany and was a vegetarian, I was forever up against the bits of bacon that seemed to be in everything!

Oooh! Yes bits of bacon are an on going struggle. They don’t make punk vegetables eh?

My brother, who is on a special diet always bemoans that bacon, here in the US, is the “new” condiment. Funny to see an ashtray on the table…no smoking in most of the US in a public area, although some places have special smoking areas.

There’s lots of smoking outside in The Netherlands undortunately.

Doh! Pink vegetables. The way I refer to meat that’s added to salads and various other dishes.

Ooops, thought I was looking through a window to the outside! Yeah, we have that here in MN, too, on many patios – and even in the winter, the patios are sometimes open and have huge heaters…

I was pleased to eat outside in October this time but yes patio heaters are dreadful.

Oh, I hadn’t picked up you were gluten free! My daughter has Celiac disease so I regularly lurk around the “free from” sections of supermarkets and spend lots and lots of time reading labels and menus.

Albert heijn has started sticking Genius bread. It’s the most fantastic stuff from the UK. They don’t always have it in store but you can order it from the delivery service. They also do a fruit bread, rolls and muffins. Bagels and beans also has GF bagels

We loved Genius bread when we were in the UK and I was so very, very happy to see it pop up on the Albert Heijn online shop last month! Thanks for the Bagels and Beans tip as there is one just down the street from us!

There’s also a gf bakery in scheveningen now. If you fancy a day trip to the seaside. http://www.thewelshbakestone.nl/
