Of Neighbours, Backyards, Dreams and Compost: Part 2

I recently wrote about a lucky coincidence with a compost bin and our neighbours which means we can start composting near the house now.

So one key thing about compost is the mix of materials. You want to create an atmosphere in the compost bin or heap where bugs and microbes can get to work on decomposing the organic matters.

So what can we compost?

Organic material
Garden waste
Kitchen waste
Paper and cardboard

What should not be composted?

Non organic waste
Plastics
Metals
Meat or fish (these can attract vermin)
Thick branches
Pernicious weeds

Balance
It’s important not to have too much of certain things. Grass cuttings for example can make the compost too wet.

In our compost we’ll be including plenty of the following:
Hedge clippings
Some grass
Egg shells
Potato peelings
Chicken waste
Fruit peel
Tea leaves

So to start off the famous dalek we had a cunning plan.

Exhibit A

A load of wonderful moss. of course it’ll take some harvesting.

Exhibit B

Oh no! Someone nicked it!

I decided all that amazing moss would be full of microbes and worms and bugs. A perfect medium for the bottom layer of the compost heap.

We’ll be building up our community compost over the next few weeks.

Do you compost citrus peel? I was always told it was too acidic. I’ve never tried it but my husband and youngest child eat tons of citrus fruit and I hate throwing it in the trash.

It does take more to decompose and isn’t suitable for wormeries. I guess if you chop it up finely it will gradually rot.

I don’t think I technically have a wormery, but I have a lot of worms. I mean my compost bin, not me personally. So they might not like the citrus.

You can add small amounts. If they don’t decompose they’ll just be identifiable in the compost when you harvest it.

I’ve not had a problem with citrus peel. Put a load in last winter and now it is compost. I understand compost is generally on the alkaline side so I am sure some acidic matter is fine. Coffee grinds are also acidic but the decompose quickly so I use them as an accelerator.

Your walk really cleaned up nice. Good luck on your new adventure. We have never had any luck with compost and have gone to Worm beds instead. I’m sure we just didn’t do something right but hopefully you will have better luck.

Thanks. It was hard work mind. We have works too but their capacity is quite small.
