The planet is our home; we need to be more responsible. Here's what I do.

Reduce, reuse, recycle! Jars!

So it happens to all of us. One wrong move and a glass hits the tiled kitchen floor.

Thousands of tiny shards spreading out into the space. When you sweep up you might find a piece somewhere ridiculously far away.

When this occurance happened recently we realised that the number of glasses left in the cupboard wasn’t sufficient anymore.

Now before we dashed down to the nearest Scandinavian homeware store I had a brainwave.

We use glass every day.

Although we try to reuse single use glass jars for our jam and single use bottles for our juices, was that enough?

I had an idea.

There’s a type of soup we’ve got fond of when there’s no veg coming in that has a really good jar.

Why couldn’t we use that as a tumbler?

Turns out we can.

The jars cleaned nicely with a soak in vinegar and water so the labels slid off.

You also see fancy jars on Pinterest that people have bought to look this way.

Now we’ve got some slightly unusual tumblers that cost nothing and didn’t cost the earth.

    Another way to recycle:

    Bags from coffee bags.

    Happy blogging!

OMG. We did the same thing because I am a professional glass breaker. I swear, I can look at a glass, and it breaks! Excellent idea!

Also, I’m sure you thought of this already, but save the lids! It’s great for a cup on the go! One of my friends uses old jars to make candles, too.

Good point. We haven’t deliberately kept lids but they are sometimes around. I’ll make a point of doing that too now!

Broken glas also means the vaccume has to come out to get all the really small pieces. I hate the vaccume. Over here we ,in the past, have been able to buy jelly ( I know sugar, sugar is bad ) in mason jars with handles on the side. We use these when we have a get together picnic style. Being heavier glass they keep things cooler longer too.

Handles? That sounds amazing. We too don’t like the vacuum. Anything to avoid that.

  4. It’s becoming quite a trendy thing round here to serve water, juice, smoothies and cocktails in old jam jars. So why not at home? : )

Another great idea! Might have my wine out of a jar tonight just to be extra classy 😉

I sweep up that broken glass and use it art projects. It looks lovely encased in clear resin in a frame. 🙂

I love using jars for everything! I have them in every cupboard in the kitchen, in the bathroom, the garage, the basement, and everywhere in between. The uses are endless.

  10. I am sure I have seen plastic detachable handles somewhere (maybe ebay) so you can use your jars for hot drinks.
