Gardener’s Delight: Oh Life

There’s a tool I use that makes me a happier gardener.

I wanted to share it because it’s very simple and easy and I think many Gardeners would find it helpful.

It’s not in the shed or my gardening bag. I didn’t get it in the garden centre.

I started using this tool about eighteen months ago and it’s really beneficial now.

It’s in the form of an email. Heres a quote from it that I got yesterday.

Oh snap, remember this? One year ago you wrote…

Working on jam. Picked over the five kg of blackcurrants. Working on jam.

It’s a very simple tool. I get an email every day. You can choose the frequency to suit your needs.

It says, It’s Wednesday, Jul 16 – How did your day go? in the title. And I reply with as much it as little information as I want to.

It was one of my first attempts to start to write every day which is a reason why I’m blogging daily now.

It forms a diary basically.

So what’s that got to do with gardening, you may ask?

Well the quote from a year ago says it all. A year ago I had just picked five kilos of black currants. Yet this year I picked them several weeks ago!

The jams all made! How smug do I feel?

So how does it work? Well that’s simple too. I registered with a service provided by Oh Life. It’s not a public space. You are your own audience and if you use email a lot it’s perfect.

Within a few days it reminds you of what you are doing the week before, the month before etc.

There’s lots of perspective. If you write you’ve had a hard day digging and tackling weeds. When you read it a week later your muscles are no longer aching. After a month the seedlings would be poking through with any luck.

Know your onions!

I’ve been doing it for a while. I like that the bad days I write about are soon not an issue any more. And reflecting on them a year later it’s really bit too bad.

This is a great idea, thank you for sharing. Sounds similar to the idea of a 5-Year journal, where you write a sentence every day, then the next year you write your sentence for the same date under the previous year’s entry, so you can see what you were doing/feeling then. I like this Oh Life idea though, if it can sort it all out online for you.

Yep. I’m wondering what it will look like when it says. ‘Two years ago you wrote….’ That’ll be in the autumn.
