Follow that tree: July

Hard to believe that July is here and another tree post calls. And it’s raining.

I’ve been following a tree as part of a blog meme from over on Lucy Corrander’s blog since March.

June has been stunning. The weather has surpassed Junes of the past few years and everything is doing well. The strong sunny days have been interspersed with rain at night so most plants are thriving and that means the trees are too.

Trees are so important in The Netherlands. There are laws against cutting them down. Even if the tree is in your garden a permit is required before you can remove one and you may be expected to plant a replacement if felling is necessary. Equally if a tree surgeon hears of a tree in need of attention he is obliged to contact the owner.

Over the past eleven years if living in our house the thirty or so trees that line the avenue have had their ups and downs. Many of the senior specimens have been removed but in each case they’ve been replaced.

Ours is one of the largest remaining specimens. It’s still able to reach across the road to its compatriot, forming part of the arch that runs the length of this section of road. When the trees reach full leaf as they are doing now, to some extent the houses ‘disappear’ from view as you cycle along.

Have to say it’s a cracking tree. I love those old country roads where you appear to be driving through a tunnel of trees, especially when you get breaks when you can seen the sun rays amazing!

It’s quite lovely when the trees are in full fettle.

Lovely to see the trees in your Netherlands setting. We have a few trees on our street, but no tree arches … yet!

Looks lovely. My kids call them ‘under trees’ – it’s fab when they roof over a whole stretch or road or lane! Great that trees are so well protected where you are…

I wish we had that law here. So many trees have disappeared from the verges and gardens around me here in the UK. I guess it’s maybe because so much of the Netherlands is low-lying and the trees help keep the water levels down?

The trees are really important that’s for sure. Every new development includes trees too.

As with the others – I find it a great pleasure to go through an arch of trees.

Yes. It’s like an atmosphere. Small ones over lanes are nice and broad arching ones are like a huge barn.

For some reason they make you feel secure, safe. Trees are good for us, we should try to be good to trees.

Our weather here in Indianapolis has been similar! I wish it was always like this! It sure beats the droughts we had in the last 2 summers!

No, we’ve had very little rain this year. It’s been a great year.
