BBQ: green heaven or hell?
It’s warm!
It’s hot!
It’s sunny!
The evenings are long!
Before you know it the air is filled with the smell of hot fat and glowing coals.
The whole of mankind (and I mean man) is busy with his tongs, apron, shorts, white knees, and sweaty fervoured brow!
Into that shed to find an armoured chariot for charred foods and raw passions.
Yes, you’ve guessed it…..
It’s time to cook in the open air!
So I was at a BBQ at the weekend. It was fantastic! Veggie options, flowing refreshments and great company.
And better still (at least to me) not a plastic utensil, cup or plate in sight!

It seems that BBQ is often a common excuse for people to forget they own these:
Now I’m not sure why but often people are sucked into believing that the easiest option is plastic. Yet the creation of permanent waste from outdoor gatherings is horrendous. This web page has plenty of facts. (they also sell products but I’m not encouraging you to buy them as we all have plenty of tools for eating and drinking already.)
A plastic fork for example can take between ten and a hundred years to decompose. So it will last far longer than the calories and hangover of the party itself!
Rather than being a green killjoy I’ll enjoy the summer without populating it with permanent reminders of the fun we have had.

We like reuseable drinks bottles for picnics, kids outings, to keep in the car etc. The bottles can be bought new, or you can just keep on reusing one bought water bottle. It means we don;t ever have to buy bottled water! You can buy metal bottles if you want to avoid plastic (but I wonder if the metal ones actually have more ’embedded energy’….?? not sure).

Plastic isn’t actually healthy to drink out of – the phtalates or something leak out into the water.
I think metal would be reuseable for far longer, too.

This has reminded me I need to go to a charity shop and buy a couple of ceramic jugs. We don’t have any jugs for drinking out of (since I accidentally smashed the glass one) and it is the best way I can think of for us to ditch more plastic over the Summer.

Every night now the air at dinner time is full of smoke and roasted something. Kill joy that I am, I think of the smoke, the animals and the plastic while hubby mows the lawn with his push mower…. Crazy people..that is us

It’s very intrusive cooking too. Vegetarian BBQ is lovely though. We’ve got some good recipes.
