It’s a Beautiful Day in the life!
This blogging place is amazing. But more of that in a moment.
Yesterday (Friday) we were feeling the spring. Our black hen, Bronte sister number II, has been feeling it too.
She’s been sitting in the nest box all day, for around a week. pecking all who approach her and guarding an empty nest box most of the time.
Now it’s tricky to explain to the hens, but without a male, brooding over eggs is a bit pointless. And brooding over a rubber egg is probably worse still!
Bronte II (perhaps Emily?) isn’t listening.
So The Chef Beekeeper, (he’s such a softie : )
decides that she should be rewarded for her efforts.
We bought our hens in a place called Stolwijk. It’s a menagerie with dozens of domestic birds for sale and some other curiosities.
They sometimes also have fertilised hens eggs.
So we headed off in the car (after feeding the new bee colony, of course)
Now it’s a little dangerous visiting certain outlets. Book shops have the same effect. All those lovely hens calling my name blinking their beautiful green eyes at me.
Green eyes, you say?
There in the third pen, were some lovely deep red bantams. New Hampshires who apparently lay every day….
So that was that one fertilised egg for Easter and two ten week old chicks.
Who are now temporarily housed in a the back yard until the other hens have got used to the idea!
As they are very similar we came up with the Thompson twins. An eighties band and famous from the Tintin books.
The cardboard muesli box we brought them home in even had Thompson Raisins in it apparently!
This morning when I’d been to check on them I discovered an award in my in-box. Another ‘egg’ so to speak.
Lita Doolan has honoured me from over at her lovely blog.
I like to see what she’s doing of a literary nature and am inspired by her warm comments too.
It’s very significant to have the support and encouragement of other bloggers. Thanks Lita, have a great day. I need to choose some nominations to pass this award on but the sun is shining and my chicks are calling, so I suspect I’ll need to think on it and update later on.
Reblogged this on Linda's wildlife garden and commented:
Lovely post Liz thank you for sharing

Well done on award. I keep telling myself I must get hens but I never seem to get around to it. Nice post.

Hens are great. Do it! It’s a win win. They eat scraps, do weeding, provide fertiliser and are amusing for free!

You’ve convinced me. I have to do it. I have to.

Thanks very much! She’s fine. I hope the egg is a good thing for her. We’ve hatched quail eggs before in an incubator so we’ll see.
