I love fungus
A new project today on the first day of the holidays.
It’s been shooting an’ shining as they say in Scotland when the weather can’t make it’s mind up.
I tackled about five other things on the holiday plan (more about that later) and then tried to find something else to do out of the rain.
I had a pack of mushroom spores.
I’ve tried using kits before with little success. Meanwhile they are expensive. This was a cheaper option.
I read recently that a kit can cost 22 times the price of buying mushrooms in the supermarkets.
This article in The Telegraph, a UK newspaper, gives the details.

Previously I’ve tried drilling holes in old bits of wood and putting polystyrene boxes under the stairs. Some were partially successful.
Some were plain useless!
So this time I had to create a manure base first. I used about five kg of garden manure that’s was bagged and dried into pellets. I added water to give it a more moist start.
Then I added the pack of spores and mixed thoroughly.
The instructions said:
Press down well
Which I did with a container as a pressure pad and then I covered this base with an earth and compost mix together.
In theory, the manure is the best environment. The spore mix should create something called mycelium. It’s a kind of root system for fungus. It should take over the rotted manure and turn it into the base that produces the edible aspect of the fungus.
The prepared mixture is now in a box in the shed for a few weeks. It needs a temperature between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius.
You’ll need to watch this space. I didn’t make a single fun-guy joke either!

This looks cool. I have been pulling the weeds out of my tubs so the berry plants will have a chance. It’s been great weather so I’ve noticed my rhubarb also looking good. Your site gives great tips but most importantly motivation!! The mushroom growing looks good too.
PS You know why the tomato hung out with mushroom?
Ahh he was a fungi to be with. Boom! 😀

Thanks Lita! I was a bit unsure about today’s post and what to write about. It’s the Monday thing. When I chose a topic for each day I figured Monday could be m words then there was the mushroom. Really like your feedback!

Bravo on doing the alphabet blogging! Takes discipline (and imagination). I’m glad I started reading your blog way before Spring because it gave me some ideas to start off with and the timing now is right to go for it. So annoying to get garden ideas in the middle of Summer and have to wait a few seasons!! Here’s to good harvests.

Thanks : ) but it’s just M! Could get tricky. You’ve been one of my most committed followers though I only started on 1st Feb. I’m busy with the seeds now. Getting carried away.

I am always looking at the ‘Grow Your Own Mushroom’ packs and wondering should I, could I……. so I shall follow your adventure with interest! I do know of someone who grows them in an old hot water cupboard in their basement with great success….. 🙂

Agree the mushroom kits are an expensive waste of time. Nearly bought some starter myshrooms to put on a tree stump at the allotment – would have been cheap but then I thought they might grow but in this uncontrolled environment they might actually also be other types of fungus which are poisonous. Good luck, anyway!

We can get organic mushrooms at our local organic farm so I think I’ll stick to something I can’t get so easily there 😉

Ah yes! Guess we are lucky in that regard. Government wants to build a railway line through the farm, though, so who knows for how much longer :’-(

Ohhhhh if only the uk government would focus in sorting out what they already have instead of adding more. In Europe trains are frequent, clean, reasonably priced and strategically routed. But they are subsidised not trying to make profits for greedy people. They offer a service that keeps countries moving. That reduces traffic, pollution and saves time. When the privatised in the uk I threw up my hands in despair.

You describe the problem most succinctly!
I really really can’t see how HS2 will solve anything but I think it’s a done deal, the UK being after all such a great democracy.

Exactly. It won’t improve much if anything. Look at Dawlish. 100+ year old connection to the south west. Ridiculous!

Yes, would make far more sense to upgrade existing lines. Ah well, a miracle may yet happen!

Wait for the results. The temperature in the shed dropped quite low yesterday. I need to insulate the box and spritz it I think.
