I had the opportunity to hang upside down in two rope loops yesterday.
I didn’t take it.
I did spend three hours doing amazing yoga in a studio.
My friend Sarah Jane has created a peaceful haven for yoga.
On the outside it looks like a normal, ordinary garage. But inside….
I’ve been doing yoga for about four years. Previously I’d wondered about it and thought it was a strange hobby.
Since I started, it’s had a really positive effect on my life.
I’ve learnt that yoga
is
a challenge
an opportunity
an experience
It seems to suit me.
There’s no sweating, panting or gasping. The classes are peaceful. I escape my day and focus.
It has fringe benefits. I’ve improved my posture and physical awareness. I think it’s also changed my body shape. It makes me think about the way I stand and move so that I try not to commit major body errors when I do.
Because it’s a gradual discipline, I’ve also begun to feel more graceful from time to time. Not the kind of thing I would’ve expected.
The challenge is to try poses, step by step so that I may, one day hang upside down from two suspended ropes. Who knows?
Just not yet.

I was doing yoga on Monday nights for a while and I loved it. Time has not allowed me to go back. I got the blocks, mat and video to try to do it at home and it was just not the same. Too much going on in the house around me and I never get quiet alone time. I hope to go back when the little one gets a little bigger.

Karate strangely had the same effect on me re feeling more graceful – something to do with balance I guess. Not very good on the duscipline front though, so organised classes ain’t really for me. My sister used to do yoga, though, and found it very beneficial 🙂

I’m not a fan if any other type of class. I’m really confused by left and right something to do with being left handed so I get list when it’s fast and furious or to loud music. But this is just my thing.

I too get confused between left and right – and I’m right-handed!

With me it’s cos I lead with my left instinctively so aerobics or whatever is just against the grain.

A chance to hang upside down and you didn’t take it! I hope you leap at the chance next time. I have just started pilates which I am finding equally as peaceful (when I remember to practice). Discipline has never been my best feature. Sounds like you have found your thing.

My yoga teacher is very conscientious about the mobility of each member of the group. She adjusts every pose to suit each individual. If you explore options in your neighbourhood I’m sure you’ll find something appropriate.
