Jigsaw puzzle pieces: growing. Successful green life

Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary.

Ten years!

Now this blog isn’t intended to be about our marriage but the ten years of success we’ve had is a massive contributor to our lifestyle plans and choices.

If we hadn’t managed to make this connection then we wouldn’t have managed to create the jigsaw that is our ongoing greening quest.

When I was in the front garden wrestling with the hedge or the lawn pleading for assistance the man himself said,

Can’t we grow something useful?

And in many respects that’s how it all began!

When we moved in our house it had a paved square at the back and a grass square at the front.
Both intensely small and apparently limited.
Both without any purpose.
Both a bit of a nuisance.
Both low maintenance!

And we were both disinterested or disengaged with outdoor things.

Ten years on, from a foundation of zero knowledge and zero potential we’ve managed to utilise both the outdoor spaces and our own previously untapped potential to totally change how we live.

Now we’ve got bees, worms, chickens, an allotment. We make or harvest jam, honey, soap, clothing, briquettes, vegetables.

We avoid plastic, consumerism, meat, pollution, chemicals, waste.

We’re also learning, enjoying, engaging, sharing.

So in short it’s a day to celebrate!

Happy anniversary and fab that you have a kindred spirit to move forward with.

Amazing the turns that life takes… You certainly won’t have been expecting to blog about purple potatoes.

Exactly. That’s why the topic struck me. If I’d have had any idea…..

I think it sounds wonderful – it started for us with some of the herbal remedies containing gluten which my husband can’t have. Now I’ve used herbs all my life but since I left the family home I had’t really developed my own work garden. So that was step one, then came why buy what you can grow (especially since you can’t always tell what they use for fertiliser). We haven’t gone further yet other than the fruit trees which give us our juice and jams. We won’t be giving up meat (sorry) but we use a local farmer and he doesn’t use hormones or grain feed. He will slaughter and cut up the beast and in it goes to the freezer. We are considering chickens for eggs but as I love to eat chicken I don’t think I should get to know them any better (makes it more difficult to cook if I knew the chook as Henrietta I’d think). Mushrooms are easy – in the box in the laundry cupboard. But we could have done none of this without each other – one says one thing – leads to something else the other chips in another suggestion and there you go.

I can completely relate to this story. (As for meat. Local and known is a sensible option in my book. There’s environmental pros and cons for all diets. )

Happy Anniversary…. If I hadn’t found a like-minded person in hubs, we wouldn’t be 31 years into our partnership…. To many many more years to the both of you….
