Rainwater toilet made easy

One of our very successful green projects <
“>rainwater toilet is still going strong.
We wanted a low cost, low impact way to avoid using the normal water supply to flush the toilet. The reason being that all european domestic water is drinkable. It seems wrong to use this in the loo.
Given that we had a balcony and a downstairs toilet on an outside wall the process was straightforward. Its still possible to use the mains in time of drought or frost and the 160litre water butt is now keeping that toilet running the majority if the time. The project cost about 50 euros and gas been working since November 2012.

Good for you! I use rain water when I am inundated but it does mean carrying it upstairs.

That’s a bit risky but still worthwhile. The barrel was a great development.

Every little helps. We find that it takes about four litres for the shower to warm up. It’s handy for the loo too.

Superb idea. Makes so much sense and in the long run I am thinking it is a money saver. I am guessing you need a fairly modern building though to make the changes. It will be ace if plumbers become also environmentalists and make this an easy thing to arrange, that would be a good niche!

Our house was built in the 1950s. It was a case if thinking carefully about what we had.

Are there any concerns of the water freezing (or general) issues with the concept of something freezing?

No. If the temperature drops we put it back on mains water.
